Work. Opendkim doesn't seem to care which format?

The key element in your reply is /default.private on the end of the keytable entry.

I read the INSTALL file as a keytable entry required the location of the directory that the signing key resides in and not the file name itself?

Would locate default.private, shazbat.private and foo.private respectively in the /usr/local/etc/dkim/ directory.

Might i suggest that the INSTALL file be amended so as to highlight that it's the file name required?
And that permissions on the file be at least 444.
