It seems that I need to change the /usr/local/etc/dkim/ directory to have executable permissions.
With /usr/local/etc/dkim/ permissions set to 555 (and the default.private/default.txt at 444) it works.
With /usr/local/etc/dkim/ at 444 or 744 i get the error loading key message.

Does opendkim really need execute permissions for access?
