2.9.0 under development

I'm about to do a push to get 2.9.0 into Beta. There's very little in the
way of new features to add, so it's mostly a cleanup release. I don't
have a particular timeline in mind other than "soon".

The only sticky issue I have right now is this thing about default
logging. As I recall, Andreas would like to flip the logic of "-l" and
"Syslog" so that logging is always on by default, and these would be used
to switch it off. The conversation was very briefly summarized in the
open bug report here:

Are there any other opinions on this? If it's a split decision, I'm
inclined to leave it as it is; however, if the community would really
prefer the default to change, we can do that for 2.9.0 (which is a
reasonable place to make such non-trivial changes).

I had planned to advance the R&D work on reputation, but I simply haven't
had the time. Hopefully this will happen for 2.10 or 3.0 or whatever the
next major release is.

Among the major tidy-up items coming in 2.9.0, you can probably expect

- drop libdkimrep support
- drop use of XML for reputation stuff (thus, drop the libxml2 dependency)
- drop our libstrl implementation
- rewrite documentation for debugging signature failures
- revise protocol (i.e., JSON syntax) for the reputation stuff

...and maybe others. As I mentioned elsewhere, there is now a formal
debate happening that could result in ADSP being declared "Historic" due
to lack of uptake and the actual potential for harm when it's used. If
that passes, and the timing is right, support for ADSP might also
disappear. The responses I got to my informal poll will be sent in
response to the impending "Last Call" on this topic.

Finally, there are several things in the bug/feature trackers marked
"pending". I use this when I need more information before I can take
action on the report; it's a request to the original poster for additional
details. Many of these have gone months without responses. If you've
filed a request in the past that hasn't gotten a reply, please take a
look; I might be blocked on you. If it sits idle for too long, I may
simply mark it as "abandoned" and tag it "wont-fix".
